The Department of Journalism and Technical Communication (JTC) supports the mission of the University by providing a high-quality, accessible, enriching education that prepares students for successful careers in a multicultural, global and technological society. As a component of the College of Professional Studies, the JTC shares the mission of the University in serving the community as a living laboratory.

Journalism and Technical Communication have dramatically changed in the past few years. Media convergence, mobile and social media, advances in video and web technology and the ongoing transformation of journalism have altered the manner by which we create, transmit, receive and comprehend media communication.

How do these changes affect journalists and technical communicators? As professional communicators, students must be able to identify the story or program purpose, design the message and use the appropriate communication medium for large, small-scale or individual audiences.

Journalism and Technical Communication students apply the underlying theories, principles, and aesthetics of their respective disciplines to communicate. Whether in a traditional classroom or the online environment, students learn how to create concise, informative messages for traditional and online print, video, audio, interactive or combinations of media formats.
