JPS 1010 Elementary Japanese I 

Credits: 5

Prerequisite: none

This course focuses on the development of functional proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Elementary grammar structures, pronunciation, conversation, both kana syllabaries, select “first year” Joyo kanji, and an overview of Japanese culture and society is introduced. 


JPS 1020 Elementary Japanese II

Prerequisite: JPS 1010

Continues Elementary Japanese I in the development of functional proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing the Japanese language as well as learning the Japanese culture, through studying vocabulary, grammar, kanji, dialogue, and communication strategies. 


JPS 2010 Intermediate Japanese I

Prerequisite: JPS 1020

Continues Elementary  Japanese II in the development of functional proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing the Japanese language as well as learning the Japanese culture, through studying vocabulary, grammar, kanji, dialogue, and communication strategies. 


JPS 2020 Intermediate Japanese II

Continues Intermediate Japanese I in the development of functional proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing the Japanese language as well as learning the Japanese culture, through studying vocabulary, grammar, kanji, dialogue, and communication strategies.


JPS 2110 Conversational Japanese I

Prerequisite: JPS 1020

Japanese conversation course to enable the students to speak more fluidly and readily. Learn different dialogues that are useful in different scenarios of everyday life in Japan and create your own survival skills. 


JPS 3110 Conversational Japanese II

Credits: 3

Prerequisite: JPS 2110

Continuation of Conversational Japanese II. Japanese conversation course to enable the students to speak more fluidly and readily. Learn different dialogues that are useful in different scenarios of everyday life in Japan and create your own survival skills. 


JPS 2120 Kanji I

250 kanji, its etymology, meaning and usage in recognizing, reading, and writing.  


JPS 3120 Kanji II

Continuation of Kanji I. 250 kanji, its etymology, meaning and usage in recognizing, reading, and writing.  


JPS 3200 Japanese through Media Culture

Credits: 3

Prerequisite: JPS 2020

Study of the Japanese language and social and cultural customs through media. Materials to include, but not limited to, are manga, online articles, and film. 


JPS 3300 Advanced Japanese: Major Topics (umbrella)

Credits: 3

Prerequisite: JPS 2020

Advanced course for those who have taken two years of basic Japanese. The variable topics in this course will target specific aspects of the language to further the understanding of the culture.
